A Redeveloped Downtown, Guided by the Community

In 2014, Yorktown officials sought the expertise of a consulting firm that specializes in the economic enhancement of downtowns, to assist in the creation of a redevelopment plan for downtown Yorktown. In its initial research, HyettPalma interviewed Yorktown residents to gain an understanding of what those living in the town wished to see in their downtown area.

Residents expressed wanting more shops, attractions that would appeal to all generations, and having a downtown that is truly “the focal point of the community.” Specifically, residents stated they’d like to see a grocery store or specialty food stores, more restaurants, clothing stores, and sporting goods or recreation stores—all of which have market opportunity to thrive in Yorktown.*

The town developed four guiding principles for its downtown redevelopment plans based on feedback from residents:

  1. Create a social and economic hub for the town of Yorktown.
  2. Develop a destination downtown Yorktown.
  3. Create a multi-generational attraction.
  4. Develop a project that creates a culture unique to Yorktown.

These principles have steered the town in its redevelopment plans, inspiring the creation of more green space for community events, pedestrian- and bicycle-friendly streets, and business opportunities. Recently, Yorktown Redevelopment Authority received an “A+” long-term rating from S&P Global Ratings, which cited the exciting opportunities it sees for economic growth in the town and its high-quality schools.

In January 2020, the Town hosted a luncheon presentation with developers and business owners from around the state to discuss business opportunities available in downtown Yorktown. This "Grow Yorktown" initiative has stirred excitement surrounding the redevelopment and has generated several interested developers.
